Early next month, Pablo Sierra is opening a used bookstore in Northwest Washington — an unlikely bet in the digital age made even more inconceivable, given that his only experience with books is reading them.
“I guess it is pretty crazy,” Sierra said, echoing an observation shared by some of his friends.
Or maybe not. Sierra, like other book lovers, has read articles about slowing e-book sales and watched as independent bookstores such as Politics and Prose thrive, catering to readers who value bookish places as cultural hubs and still think the best reading device is paper.
Used bookstores, with their quintessential quirkiness, eclectic inventory and cheap prices, find themselves in the catbird seat as the pendulum eases back toward print. In many cities, that’s a de facto position: They’re the only book outlets left.

A "curta" demonstra a importância da leitura realizando uma belíssima homenagem aos livros físicos. Inspirado igualmente pelo furacão Katrina, Buster Keaton, O Mágico de Oz e pelo amor aos livros, "Morris Lessmore" trata-se de uma história bem humorada, sobre pessoas que dedicam suas vidas aos livros e livros que devolvem este favor.
Por isso, as duas resolveram juntar-se e lançaram a campanha On The Same Page, que pede que a indústria internacional de livros e media se envolva ativamente na garantia do respeito aos direitos humanos.
Como os direitos mínimos estão sendo desafiados em várias partes do mundo, a campanha surgiu para mobilizar livreiros e editores em todo o mundo e garantir que estão todos “na mesma página”.
Para participar, os livreiros são convidados a montar exposições de livros selecionados, enquanto os editores podem organizar leituras e eventos dedicados ao tema dos direitos humanos. O apelo para aderir estende-se a autores, tradutores, ilustradores, poetas, blogger, humoristas... e todos os visitantes da Feira.

A campanha nas redes sociais começa em Setembro e diversos eventos sobre o tema estão sendo preparados para a Feira de Frankfurt.

Black humor is an integral part of the group dynamic. The common denominator for all these women, Israeli and Palestinian, is bereavement. All have lost close family members to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, all are members of the Parents Circle – Family Forum, an organization that seeks to foster dialogue between the opposing sides based on a common sense of pain. “The understanding that the pain of loss is the same pain is always the starting point,” says Damelin, who became very active in the forum after her son David was killed in 2002.
