Senhor/a Director/a... Psst!

O Hub é um lobby australiano em defesa das bibliotecas escolares e da sua qualidade.

What is The Hub on PhotoPeach

Next time you, as a school administrator, might be thinking of no longer funding book purchases for the library, cutting the library budget further, deploying your TL to other roles in the school, not including a TL in your staffing formula, replacing your TL with an unqualified ‘library manager’ or moving your library into cyberspace, remember that 14 years of replicated and validated research shows that school libraries DO make a difference to student achievement. Such decisions are ‘worst practice’. Our students need ‘best practice’ actions to improve schools’ returns from this authentic investment in children’s learning.

E ainda:

The Hub has made an effort to publish for principals and teachers, alerting them both to the research.
Kerry Neary School libraries: making a difference published in its original form in The Queensland Principal: the Journal of the Association of State School Principals Inc., Vol. 3, No. 3, September 2007. Some minor changes have been made here to accommodate a wider audience. Also republished in ConnectionsVol 69 Term 2 2009. Updated and republished for an Australia wide audience:The Australian Educational Leader 2009.
Recently, ACER published our article in their Teacher journal (Jan/Feb 2011), Who’s in your school library? by Georgia Phillips.
Although not refereed academic articles, the articles for principals by Sue Spence have alerted them to the research and provided the enlightened views of some principals.
Sue Spence Creating 21st century learning communities“. Principal MattersVASSP, Melbourne, Victoria. Issue No. 67, Winter 2006, and “Teacher librarians, an under utilised asset in schools,” in Curriculum Leadership, Vol 3 Issue 14, 20 May 2005.
Also Marlene Filippi had her article on teacher librarians published in Australian Educational Leader (Vol 30 No 3 2008), "Are you the Principal of an information literate school community?" It is provided on The Hub website with permission of the author.
The Hub has early on taken the decision to direct its publishing efforts toward those outside of the TL profession, including parents. Has it had any impact? Difficult to say.
